I Just Called To Say I Love Me

Having been on “vacation” (quotes because my ideal vacation includes exactly zero scalpels but I’ll take what I can get) for three weeks now, I have gotten a ton of writing done. Little of it TCG related, but all of it beneficial for the girl behind the tomato.

Along with writing, I have been lucky enough to discover some new (to me) blogs, as well as catch up with some of my favorites. Since I don’t have a blogroll, I have decided to share.

* David C. Garcia writes davidcgarcia.com, a hilarious blog about everyday things that happen to this snarky, irreverent dad-to-be. I am so looking forward to reading about the impending birth of his child. For now, do yourself a favor and read the post titled “My Motherf****ng Tapered, Acid-Washed Jeans”.

*The anonymous “Doll Face” writes fluidpusher.com. A charming and down to earth look at the funeral industry, from the inside. Proof that office politics are not industry specific and that annoying coworkers are annoying coworkers, even with dead bodies chillin’ in the next room.

*YOU GUYS! Two ladies, who have dubbed themselves “Barista” and “The Lone Wolf” are writing the brilliant cafedarkness.wordpress.com. It is a pee-yer-pants funny look at the things that happen to most of us, but don’t occur to write about them. I predict that they will win an RVANews Blog Award this coming year, because I am already mounting the campaign. That’s right, mounting.

*Mariane Matera writes several blogs, my favorite being urban-pigeon.blogspot.com. She is smart and dry and she raises an eyebrow, daring you to laugh at the things she says. The blog is so readable that I stumbled on it one day and didn’t look up for three hours. Scroll down to “The Truth About Jon & Kate” and see what I mean.

*Most locals know, and read regularly, but I would like to hit my national readers with Mr. Jeff Kelley, creator of tarichmond.com, a blog about my (adopted) fair city and the absurdity and awesomeness that is life here. Like a local version of theonion.com, he and his team point at the obvious stupidity in politics and media and ask “Why the hell is nobody laughing at these assholes?” Why, indeed, Mr. Kelley.

*Still in it’s infancy, Chad Brown and Jolie O’Dell are at the helm of omgwtfrva.com, a blurry look at the hard drinkin’, hard livin’, hard lovin’ side of the 804. It’s like Girls Gone Wild, if some of the girls were boys. Every day I think to myself that there CAN’T be a new post because surely nobody can consume that much alcohol for that many days in a row and live. But there is, and they do. And it’s even entertaining. One night partying with them and I fell out, begging for mercy. Cheers, OMGWTFRVA.

*Jocelyn Testes-Harder writes filthyrichmond.com, a dirty/sassy/terrible/wonderful satire of a life that is too much country. The descriptions of her interactions with her boss, new husband, and children are uncomfortable and, ultimately, a riot. Warning: NSFTWTTTS (Not Safe For Those Who Take Themselves Too Seriously)

*Cristina writes the mommyblog delbueno.net, and, while I am normally all “barf” when it comes to that whole genre, she makes it funny and real. Every mom wants to ring her kids’ necks from time to time, or at least run away forever. She is not afraid of saying so, which earns big points in my book. And her daughters are full of antics and girlenergy which takes me back to my own days as a precocious little scamp.

Also, did you know I have been given my own advice column? It’s called “Ask The Checkout Girl” and features yours truly dishing out the sass in response to reader questions. It runs in Belle Magazine, the monthly girlmag put out by Style Weekly. Unfortunately, Belle doesn’t have a website, but if you are local you can find a copy by going to the Style site and clicking on the blue “Belle” box down on the right-hand side. Please support the little magazine that could and pick one up! Also, I’m always looking for questions so feel free to email belle@stylemag.com with anything you want my take on.

Back to work on Tuesday!

    Soft Spot -
I don’t think so. Oh, except for a few weeks ago when Ryan Nobles read my tweet on the eleven o’clock news. Someday, my friend. Someday.

  • Hi, good article, you posted all the same if you don’t mind I’d impart few points out around approaching young ladies or guys. Peculiarly it can be hard when it occurs to man woman relationships. The important affair is your posture, which should be strong and open. If you have an posture like that, any individual shouldn’t discover any troubles that you have addressing as presenting. When you get a conversation, you usually desire to need safe questions that are sure not to cause her any irritation. Once the conversation makes some momentum, you can require more physical queries. A good fox is to learn some questions she made a point of so whenever the conversation slows down, you can bring up one of these questions.
